24/7 Cyber Incident Response – Call (833) 558-5505 Immediately

Missing Pieces

She Built Missing Pieces Over 33 Years. One Email Put It All at Risk. Oranje Cybersecurity Gave Her Peace of Mind.

Janice Perkins knows her business cold. Cybersecurity? Not so much.

Thirty-three years. One morning. Everything at risk.

Janice built Missing Pieces Discontinued Tableware into a global operation on Academy Road in Winnipeg. Celebrities. Government House. Royal Doulton shipped to Singapore. 50,000 items. A registry going back to 1993. Customers across three continents.

Then a simple email arrived.

The Attack Nobody Saw Coming

A client's account had been compromised without either of them knowing. Attackers sent Janice a message that appeared to be from that client, a familiar name, a normal request, a link to what looked like a shared file.

She clicked. She logged into what she thought was her Microsoft account. In that moment, the bad actors were in.

It worked because it does not ask you to trust a stranger. It asks you to trust someone you already do. It does not target large corporations with dedicated IT departments. It targets people running real businesses, managing real customers, doing real work, people exactly like Janice. People exactly like you.

They get into the email, and then they start going after everything else.

The Response

Oranje moved fast. First came containment, invalidating every session the attackers had access to and cutting them off immediately. Then remediation, changing passwords across every connected account before anything further could be reached and locking in multi-factor authentication. From there came monitoring and validation, a full review of every affected account to confirm the attackers were gone and that nothing had slipped through.

This is what partnership looks like. Not a help desk ticket. Not a callback window. Someone who picks up, understands what is at stake, and acts.

What Was at Stake

Missing Pieces Discontinued Tableware is not a corner shop with a cash register. Her financial records are managed through QuickBooks. Her custom registry contains the purchase history, pattern preferences, and wish lists of thousands of customers collected since 1993.

Four part-time staff work across three computers, each needing distinct levels of access to different systems. Her website, running alongside an active eBay store, processes sales every single day.

All of it was connected to that one email account.

You do not need to be running a 50,000-item operation for this to apply to you. A freelancer with a client list. A tradesperson with years of invoices. A household managing banking, insurance, and personal accounts. The exposure is the same. So is the solution.

The Fix

After the breach was contained, Janice did not go back to business as usual. She worked with Oranje to put a full protection system in place and she has not looked back.

Oranje deployed endpoint security across every device, with real-time monitoring, threat protection, and patch management running quietly without disrupting a single day's work.

They secured her email with filtering sophisticated enough to catch compromised accounts even when the sender is someone you know. Encrypted cloud backups now protect her financial records. A secure password manager protects every password in the operation, replacing a tangle of reused credentials with randomly generated keys that even her team does not need to memorize.

Each computer now has tiered access, so staff can reach what their role requires, and nothing more. And Janice can monitor and manage all of it from her phone.

Pretty seamless. Everything I do at my desk, each computer is all set up differently. And I can get into everything from my phone.

The Warning Signs Were Already There

They were just hard to read.

Hundreds of automated attempts had quietly probed her e-commerce platform, testing stolen credit cards with sub-$2 purchases. On another occasion, her customers began receiving fake emails that appeared to come from her.

Both times, the gap in her defences was visible to the people exploiting it, just not to her.

Most small business owners are in the same position. They know their business. They trust their customers. They just do not see it coming.

Peace of Mind

Janice Perkins made a smart call. She chose to protect what she had spent 33 years building.

Now she can concentrate on doing what she loves best, tracking down a Royal Doulton Sarabande teapot, completing a set that has been in someone's family for decades, and finding the one piece everyone else said was gone for good. Somewhere out there, someone is looking for exactly what she has.

Oranje Cybersecurity Group found the missing piece in her operation.

It lets me sleep better.
